Faux burnt edges

Hi all! I participate in the technique lovers challenge over at SCS from time to time and last weeks technique was faux burnt edges.

It's all done with ink and a dauber or sponge. I thought I'd give it a try and here is my result.

The background paper is made by using distress inks, water, crinkled up paper and an iron. I used Vintage photo distress ink and water to color the ivory paper that the ship collage is stamped on. The deckled rectangle nestabilities were used to cut out the image.

I used a fingertip dauber to add three layers of different color distress inks to give the edges a burnt look.

This technique is actually pretty easy and fun to do. It goes well with the ship collage stamp from The Angel Company or any nautical/map stamps. Actually, I can think of a few other ways to use this technique - hmmm, might be worth another try on some camping scrapbook pages!

More challenge cards!

Hi everyone! I got a rare treat on Monday and got to participate in two challenges over at SCS. The technique lovers challenge and the Clean and Simple challenge. I'll link up the posts below if you'd care to take a look later.

This first one is the one I did for TLC. It's a crimped envelope pocket card. You take a normal A2 envelope and cut 1 1/4" off one end after you've sealed it. Stamp or decorate it as you see fit, run it through your crimper and then make a card insert to go along with it.

After I found and dusted off my crimper, I had the idea of using one of my favorite SU sets, Best Blossoms and pairing it with some Dragonfly images from Impression Obsession. First I sponged on some distress ink in faded jeans and let it dry. I used Palette Jardin Moss to stamp the leaves and did some ghost stamping, too. The dragonfly stamp is a set of three together - so I colored one dragonfly with a black marker and randomly stamped it on the face of the envelope. Then I ran that portion through my crimper. I added the spring moss grosgrain ribbon to the top and tied a knot (several times, since I never get it right the first time).

The insert card is made the same way - I just added the sentiment in the bottom right hand corner. I took another piece of white card stock and sponged some more faded jeans around the outside so that it would match the envie. I love how this turned out! You can see the challenge here.

This next one was done for the Clean and Simple challenge to accent with dots on your card. You could not use the swiss dots CB folder or DP, but had to do some paper piercing or add dots using a marker. I decided to add some paper piercing between some score lines on the left and bottom of the card. The stamps are from Verve and I colored the flower with Copic Ciao Markers in V12, V15 and V17. The scalloped circle has paper piercing around it, too.

Technique spotlight - sponging

This is a card I did for the technique challenge over at a shade of blue. The challenge is to do a bit more sponging than just the outside edges of an image or card.

I fell in love with this stamp when I attended a basic stamping class at my LSS. It's from Just for Fun stamps. Anyway, during the class we brayered the background orange while masking the sun. I have never been able to duplicate that look! I own three brayers and I can not get one of them to work for me! So, in frustration I got out my sponges and daubers and went to work and this is the end result.

I'm also really excited to announce that I have been asked to be on the Altered Angels Design team on A shade of blue. I don't alter a lot of things - stuck in the card rut, I guess. But this should be a great way for me to step outside of my four walls and be a little creative!

Technique challenge - Masking

I did this for the next technique challenge over at ASB. I really struggled with this card! It's one of those that just didn't want to come together - no matter what I did.

The center daisy is masked - which is the challenge - and then I worked the daisies into the other panels. So, I get this all done (except for the sentiment and the top right hand daisy) and it's sitting on my work space. I'm on to the next project - I look down and what do I see??? A big black smudge of ink in the top right corner of this card. GRRR! Now, I'm about to throw this in the trash - but thought, Hmmm, how can I save this one? I stamped another two daisies, cut them out and popped them up to cover the ink spot! Whipper Snapper Stamps has this stamp saying (which I almost used on this card!) "There are no mistakes in stamping, only embellishment opportunities" - you can see the stamp here. Can you say stamping MacGyver!

By the way, if you head over to A Shade of Blue, you will see one of my cards that won their spring stamping contest! Woo Hoo! I never win anything - so this was really exciting!

New Technique - Varnished Alcohol

I liked what I saw in the technique junkies December newsletter on Varnished floating pearls, but I had none of the supplies to do it with. So, while playing around trying to match it, I came up with this new twist and call it varnished alcohol!

Supplies:
White copy/printer paper (cut to size of your project)
Simple Solution 2 (can be purchased at your local craft store)
Alcohol inks of your choice of color
foam brush



Crumble up your white printer paper tightly and then flatten out. You want to make sure that there is enough wrinkles in the paper. Using a small container, mix your simple solution (about 1-2 tablespoons) with your choice of colors of alcohol inks. I used pearl in mine and it left a really nice sheen on my finished project.
Brush on your mixture with a foam brush and then let dry or heat set. Finish your project.

Card Sketch #42 and a technique!

Here's twist for you. A card sketch and a technique all in one!

I started off doing my technique challenge #38 over at a shade of blue and liked how my card was turning out and decided to sketch it, too!

The main panel is done using the faux silk technique using tissue paper. I also stamped the flower sprig with versamark and embossed with clear embossing powder for the background panel. Both of these are layered with brown cardstock. The sentiment was stamped on ivory paper and layered with pink to match the flowers. I used Marvy LePlume markers in pale pink, bubble gum pink and leaf green to color in the asian flower. Pink brads were added to finish off the card. Technique Challenge - TP casting

I just wanted to share with you a technique challenge over at A Shade of Blue. I just recently decided to be a part of their challenge team and came up with this fun technique to try!
